John’s belief was that every man hides behind a mask when he speaks to a woman. He may court her with flowers and sweet words, but even when he loves her, he manages never to really tell her the truth.
John warns that flowers and fine words can only get a man so far. It is the woman who must remove the mask and determine which suitor will make the best mate.
